JULY 2018

The Janus decision was announced on June 27. No court decision will weaken our members’ commitment to our union because we are #IFTstrong. The IFT Communications Department has put together a social media kit to help members respond to the Janus decision. The kit includes sample tweets and Facebook posts, a share graphic, a sign to print and use in a “Solidarity Selfie,” and IFT Truth Squad graphics that you can share on social media. Don’t forget the hashtag: #IFTstrong.

ICYMI: the Illinois Legislature passed a minimum salary bill for teachers, and we hope the Governor signs it into law (but it’s not promising). It’s one step in a broader need to address the teacher shortage in Illinois. Check out this interview with IFT President Dan Montgomery talking about our support. Read more about it here.

Lawmakers in Illinois also passed a budget, but it included a provision that hurts teachers’ salaries and pensions. Read more here, and sign the petition to tell politicians that educators shouldn’t be punished for financial problems they didn’t cause.

To avoid the summer brain drain, AFT’s Share My Lesson has put together a collection of summer learning information and suggestions:

Check out this video highlighting the grad student groups, including U Chicago’s GSU, who have recently found power through joining a union.

Grad students aren’t the only ones! A new report by the Chronicle of Higher Education confirms that adjunct teachers are better off with a union.

The Chicago Sun-Times is offering a special deal to union workers. For only $60/year or $5.50 per month, union members can get unlimited digital access, a daily e-paper (digital version of the day’s actual newspaper), and the Working 360 email newsletter. More information is available here.

Happy 4th of July! Share our Independence Day graphic and make sure your cookout shopping list is full of union made items.
