Just a few days since his confirmation as president-elect, Joe Biden has promised hundreds of billions of dollars in new education spending—for preschool through college. Through executive action and negotiations with Congress, Biden plans to rebuild and re-fund public schools. Additionally, he has proposed student loan forgiveness and wants to overturn a Trump-era regulation governing how colleges deal with sexual harassment and assault. Referring to his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, a community college professor, Biden likes to tell educators, “You’re going to have one of your own in the White House.” He has also promised to appoint an educator as education secretary. Biden’s plans represent a huge turnaround from the actions of Trump-appointed Secretary Betsy DeVos, who alienated many by casting public schools as failures and promoting alternatives to them.
