In an era of fake news, how do you discern what information is factual?

In a series of free classes, Daily Herald editors and District 214 journalism teachers will educate the community on how to identify lies, spin and bias that might masquerade as news.

You'll learn how words, photos, audio recordings and even video can be faked, and why reputable journalists don’t do so. Hear how a news organization operates, and pretend you’re the editor weighing the day’s news.

The fall 2018 classes include:

• Facts Matter: What is Bias? Wednesday, September 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Facts Matter: How to Spot Fake News Wednesday, October 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Facts Matter: How Well Can You Trust Photos & Videos? Wednesday, October 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Facts Matter: How Does a News Organization Work? Wednesday, October 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Facts Matter: The First Amendment as a Protector of Democracy Wednesday, October 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

All classes will be held in the Theater in the Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights. Registration for each class is required.
